Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (KMCTH) is one of the most prestigious Medical College of Nepal, affiliated to Kathmandu University and fully recognized by the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) and Sri Lankan Medical Council (SLMC) located in the capital city, Kathmandu. Established in 1997, it has trained more than 2000 MBBS and 300 postgraduate doctors, over 200 BDS doctors and around 300 BSc Nurses. Presently DM/ MCh courses are being run in many super-specialty subjects. Our Medical College leverages the scientific capabilities, expertise and resources to provide evidence-based medical education. Well-equipped with high-tech state-of-the-art investigative facilities, like bi-plane Cath Lab, 3 Tesla MRI and 128 slice CT scan and services of 40 bedded NICU, 160 bedded ICU and 750 general bed capacities, the hospital provides advance facilities like organ transplant service, Robotic neuro-surgery, minimal invasive and endoscopic/ laparascopic surgeries.
The Department of Neurosurgery at KMCTH started its services in 2012. Now with 4 faculties it serves as a tertiary care neurosurgical training and referral center. 3 years back it was certified by Medical Education Commission (MEC), the governing body of medical education in Nepal, to start it’s MCh course, making it one of the few centers in the country eligible to run MCh training in neurosurgery. The faculties, of whom two are professors and one associate professor, bring with them immense knowledge and teaching experience. Along with neurologists, neuro-interventionists, intensivists and psychiatrists, the center provides comprehensive care of neuro-trauma, cerebrovascular, neuro-oncology, peripheral nerve injury and spinal diseases besides providing state of art services like functional neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery, skull base surgery, pediatric surgery and minimal invasive or endoscopic surgeries.
With the latest equipment like Zeiss Kinevo 900 microscope, Karl Storz exoscopic systems, Cavitronic Ultrasonic Aspirator CUSA excel, Medtronic Stealth Neuronavigation S8 system and autoguide cranial robot system, the department has been in the forefront in the region, in introducing and using latest technology in health care. As a leader in the field of neurosurgery, the department has been the first in performing many complex surgeries and establishing new services in neurosurgical discipline in the country.
With a well-equipped dedicated hybrid neurosurgical skill lab, the trainees have ample opportunity to have hands-on training in micro-neurosurgical, endoscopic and exoscopic surgeries. Exposure to cadaveric training is also being facilitated. The Department has already conducted over 50 on-site training programs and short courses ranging from operative to clinical courses like use of ultrasound in ICU and neurosurgical operations.
An ideal candidate is a young neurosurgeon from a residency training program or an equivalent program from developing or developed countries who during her or his residency demonstrated good skills in micro-neurosurgery. Furthermore, the fellows should have work experience of no longer than three (3) years after concluding the residency training.
